Early designs were primitive. In 1956, Dr. James Corby of the Weapons Guidance and Delivery unit, developed an inertial navigation system that relied heavily on gyroscopes spinning at very high revolutions per minute. Coupled with an internal topographical map of the target area, Corby's research led to the guidance system of the Tomahawk missile. The same technology is used in NoWaterball "No Sand", "No Trees", and "No Water" golf ball guidance systems.

NoWaterball golf balls are manufactured using technology developed during the Cold War at Los Alamos National Laboratory testing facility in New Mexico. Using Space-Aged polymers similar to those used aboard the Space Shuttle, Government scientists developed a water repellant surface to be used during space capsule re-entry modules by the astronauts.
